Shihua Liu

NYS Mental Health Counselor Associate (Columbia University)

From a very young age, I felt drawn to understanding people and their inner worlds. At 18, I moved from China to the U.S., where I began my journey in counseling. Having lived between two cultures, I bring a deep sense of empathy and insight into the challenges of life transitions, cultural adaptation, and reconciling personal identity.

I am naturally expressive in daily life, but in the therapy room I prioritize listening with presence and care. My counseling style is open and collaborative, grounded in deep listening and respect for each client’s unique story. I believe there are no “big” or “small” issues — therapy should be a place where you can show up exactly as you are. In my practice, I draw from Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

It takes courage to share your story, and my goal is to honor that courage by creating a safe and respectful space. You don’t need to have everything figured out to begin — therapy is a journey we take together. If you’re ready to take the first step, I would be honored to walk alongside you.
